Mixed media and decoupage on canvas - step by step tutorial

Materials list Canvas rice paper (here) decoupage glue acrylic paint (here) Stencils (here) structure paste fabric hardener or glue pieces of fabric or lace flat brushes and sponge brushes palette knife

Before you start: Select the paper you want to use and choose paint colours. Think carefully about the composition. When you make a decision, start with applying structural paste using a stencil and palette knife. Apply some paste in random places to add texture.

Dry and sand the sharp edges before painting
Paint the canvas using your selected colours, leave a blank space for gluing rice paper.

Apply glue on canvas

Apply glue on top of paper, starting from the centre to remove any air.

Paint around picture to blend paper into background.

Now prepare pieces of fabric and lace. Dip them in the fabric hardener (or glue) and squeeze. Apply some hardener in selected locations. Shape the fabric and leave to dry.

When dry, use a dry brush with a small amount of paint (dry brush technique) and highlight some parts on fabric.
